Rio Tinto, BHP and Fortescue are expanding or replacing capacity to protect volumes and reduce costs. Rio’s Simandou project targets full production in the second half of 2028, while BHP plans to lift WAIO capacity above 305 million tpy. Fortescue increased Blacksmith’s resource estimate to 615 million tonnes. Future demand growth is increasingly expected from India and Southeast Asia rather than China alone.
