- The European Commission proposed restricting ferrous and non-ferrous scrap exports to several non-OECD countries.
- India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Vietnam and Thailand were among the applications rejected in the draft.
- India is a major destination for European ferrous scrap and accounted for 87% of EU stainless scrap exports in 2025.
- The restrictions could reduce scrap availability for Indian and other Asian steelmakers while increasing supply inside Europe.
- The proposal remains under consultation, with the new Waste Shipment Regulation scheduled to apply from May 21, 2027.
